It’s rare that you find an artist with the combination of personality and pure rap talent that 1TakeJay possesses. Whether you’re tapped in for his hilarious antics on Instagram, or for the massive party tracks he churns out - you can’t help but keep up with the artist out of Compton.
His new mixtape Wait Hol Up puts both his personality and rap skills on full display with 15 tracks of straight heat. Jay’s rapid delivery and trademark catchphrases characterize a project that’s just as fun as the artist behind it.
Honesty and unfiltered narratives are found on every track. 1TakeJay is loud, in your face and indifferent to anybody that isn’t feeling what he’s doing. He tells the story of what he’s seen, what he’s been through - and he does it without worrying about fitting in with the rest of LA’s budding rap scene. Instead, he’s developed a niche for himself, and people have embraced it.
Not only has LA embraced 1TakeJay; he’s embraced the city, and it shows on this project. If you tune into his IG story on any given day, you’ll always catch shoutouts to other artists coming up in the area. Fittingly, Wait Hol Up features many of those same artists with contributions from AzChike, Kalan.frfr, Johnny Rose, King TU, and Jay’s 1Take teammates - 1TakeQuan & 1TakeTeezy.
1TakeJay’s charisma and energy make him an easy collaborator, and he shines on many of these group efforts. A standout on the project is ‘I Know’ feat. Kalan.frfr, simply because 1TakeJay is able to fit so perfectly on a song type that we haven’t heard him on very much. It’s a promising sign that he’ll be able to grow and adapt as his fan base evolves.
1TakeJay taps in with a ton of producer talent to give the project as diverse a sound as possible. The beats are handled by S.Prod, Bruce24k, Saltreze, YikeMike, BigLankOnTheTrack, WestCoastAce, Aston Martin, MJTheHitta, ScratchGoCrazy, WavyTre, Jay GP Bangz, Jay Thuggy, and TeezyMadeIt aka 1TakeTeezy, who also mixed the project.
1TakeJay is proving to be a leader in LA’s incoming class of rap talent, and Wait Hol Up serves as one of many defining moments already on his resumé. Listen below:
