Compton rapper Holland Izz has been coming on strong in the past year, and now his debut project Sunny Tapes Vol. 1 showcases his budding potential across 16 tracks. Just as bright as the title implies, the vibrant collection has something for everyone, mixing booming 808’s with hazier, more laid back cuts for a fitting soundtrack to summertime in LA.
Unorthodox melodies are on display throughout Sunny Tapes Vol. 1, shining on songs such as “Summer Love.” Holland’s squeaking vocals question if the girl on his mind is “a summer love, or a fling,” before an excerpt of a speech given by the incomparable Lauryn Hill in 2000 ends the song on a thoughtful note.
Hill’s words of wisdom about the necessity of defeat and the quest for real love resonate on the outro, beautifully leading into the next track “You The One Pt 2.” Sampling Faith Evans’ soulful R&B cut “You Are My Joy (Interlude),” Holland handles the hook while fellow artists Tauvaa and Raven spill their heart on the respective verses, impressively filling out the song.
When love isn’t on his mind, Holland’s rambunctious energy and boastful bars are a formidable combination on songs like “All That.” Originally released as a single ahead of the project, colorful production livens the background with an infectious bounce, perfect for pool party season under the sun.
With such a unique sound, Holland probably would have fared just fine without the parade of features that pop out on the tracklist. Still, contributions from Skooder, 3TRINZZZ, KB Devaughn, Kyle Splash and Tauvaa among others hold their own for the most part, allowing the soundscape to stay fresh with new voices throughout.
Still, Sunny Tapes Vol. 1 succeeds because of Holland Izz first and foremost, and should pave the way for him to make more hometown noise going forward. Stream the mixtape below, and be sure to keep the eclectic rapper on your radar for the future.
